The Best Universal Paint Sprayers For Fences, Walls and Ceilings!

Painting and Decorating, Walls and Ceilings · 13 October 2020

In recent years paint sprayers have become the norm when it comes to painting in the home and garden. Paint sprayers drastically cut down the amount of time when compared to a roller! If you are going to use a paint sprayer in the home then you will need to cover any area not being painted!

Paint sprayers work best when you have an empty house that needs renovating, we would not use a sprayer for one room because the prep time is high considering you will need to use newspapers or plastic sheeting to cover any area not being sprayed!

For garden fences a paint sprayer is the perfect tool, just be sure to cover the floor because fence stain and paints are extremely hard to remove from tiles, decking and patios!

Should I Use A Paint Sprayer?

Paint sprayers are designed for larger areas because it covers quick, takes a while to set up and the prep time is high. Using a paint sprayer is messy even if your careful and take your time!

I would only get out my paint sprayer if I was painting ceilings, walls and the wooden accessories. This is because you start spraying the ceiling and then the walls and finish off with a brush to gloss wooden accessories!

TOP TIP: You still have to cut in with a brush when paint spraying, frog tape is not going to cut it! When it comes to cutting paint into the ceiling, corners and skirting boards your paint sprayer does not have an adaptor for this!

Preparing For Paint Spraying

When you are ready to start painting with your new paint sprayer be sure to prepare your walls and ceiling before spraying. Use interior filler and make sure you sand any filler back, sugar soap should also be used to remove and grease from your walls.

  • Sand your walls and ceilings
  • Clean with sugar soap (kitchens)
  • Use interior filler
  • Sand filler until fingertip smooth

Plastic Sheeting and Newspaper

You must use plastic sheeting or newspapers when spraying. You might not notice with the naked eye but droplets of paint will fall on the floor, picture rail, skirting boards and door frames if not covered.

  • Cover skirting boards, doors and door frames
  • Use plastic sheeting or newspaper
  • The decorating tape or frog tape will keep them in place
  • Always test the nozzle type on a sheet of paper

Paint Sprayer -FAQ’S

How do I clean my paint sprayer?

An effective way to clean your paint sprayer after use or between uses is a thinner such as white spirit or water for water-based paints. You must keep your paint sprayer in top condition because if paint sets it will block the nozzle and not function as should!

Why is my paint sprayer leaving paint runs?

If your paint sprayer is leaving paint runs then you should turn down the outlet valve. Or you are not being quick enough and to much paint is being applied in one spot. Reduce the outlet valve or move the sprayer at a quicker rate!

My paint gun is spitting?

This will only happen when your paint has run out or you have a blockage in the paint sprayer. I would suggest emptying the device cleaning it and running some water through to clear the blockage!

Can I dilute the paint?

No, never dilute paint in your paint sprayer, if your paint is too thin then you will get drips and runny paint. You need to keep the original consistency of the paint being used!

Can I use gloss in my paint sprayer?

No, gloss is to thick to be used as a spray. If you use gloss in your spray painter then you will be disappointed because it will run and drip out of your paint sprayer nozzle!

Conclusion – Paint Sprayers!

Using a paint sprayer is very productive especially in larger areas because the paint just keeps on coming. There is no need to keep using a roller tray and making a mess. Although a paint sprayer can be messy especially if your a beginner and have no experience when it comes to using a paint sprayer!

To avoid excessive spray try and be consistent and use the right nozzle before your start. Start slow and continue to increase the spray pressure until you find the best setting for yourself.

Happy Painting 😉
