Cuprinol Garden Shades is an excellent wood paint, but can also be used for stone and brick, much like a masonry paint!
Although its best for sheds, fences, furniture, kennels and treehouses.
But, not suitable for decking because it’s slippery when dry and will rub-off/crack if walked over!

- Price RANGE: 3/5
- Quality Of Product: 5/5
- Application: 4/5
- Average £25 – £32
Review Digest. The Cuprinol Garden Shades is currently the leading wood paint on the market. It comes in fantastic colours and covers well, rarely needing a second coat! Although if your timber is of a darker variety or the original stain is dark brown then you may need to apply a second coat.
What I like about this wood paint is that it brings out the natural grain of your timbers. Another downside is that it is NOT suitable for decking because it will rub off fairly quickly if walked across!
Reviewers Experience And Tips
- Before you purchase your timber, panels or shed, make sure it is not treated with a dark stain because you will 100% have to use two coats. Apart from this, I found Cuprinol Garden Shades covered my fence panels and shed with one layer.
- If you’re using a spray to apply this paint, then make sure you use a cover because it can be tricky to remove!
Positives
- Easy application
- Lasts over five years
- Low odour
- Easy to maintain
- A wide range of colours
Negatives
- Costly (but worth the price!)
- May need two coats
- Not suitable for decking
Editors Notes – Cuprinol Garden Shades Review!
“I am a contractor, and I have been offering Cuprinol Garden Shades to my customers for many years. It covers well, looks brilliant and has many colours to select. No other brand in the UK can offer the colour range and durability of the Cuprinol brand. It also works great for weathered timber, giving them a new lease of life and making them last longer because of the way this wood paint waterproofs. If you want the wow factor in your garden, then the Cuprinol Garden Shades is your answer.” – Review by Mak
Conclusion
If you want the best product for a good job, then Cuprinol garden shade is the brand you should be using. Customers love the colours, and it lasts much longer than any other brand available. CHRIS, Basingstoke.

I painted my fence with this stuff and it still looks like the day it was first applied! Its been a few years now and might need touching up this year. Very impressed with the colors used and how much a tin lasted! If you are goinf to use it then make sure your roller it on because it goes so much further!
I use this Cuprinol on my garden shed and is still looking good after three years! I have now painted my rabbit hutch, kennel, and fence, Yes, it’s expensive but last such a long time! Highly recommend this paint for all wood stuff in your garden, Cam

Yes, Cuprinol is an OK brand to use for timber care. But you cannot beat Ronseal, I have used it on all my fences and apply every year to keep them looking good!

You cannot fault Cuprinol on an amazing product! It covers well and the colours are amazing. Its been a year since we painted our fence and shed with their new Cuprinol garden shades and it still looks like it was painted yesterday. I was impressed with this product!

What am I doing wrong…..my shed has the distressed look after first coat. I had previously used Shades and don’t remember this. I now have to lightly sand between coats to get a good finish. Not what I wanted to be doing to a garden shed
Hey Marie,
Yes you should always sand and remove the last coat of paint, or take the top sheen off! Also repair any broken slats etc. I hope you next coat is more successful. We are here for anymore tips or help you need. Wezaggle
